Shandi's Flat Knitting Hat Pattern

A while back my friend Shandi found a hat at the college that she fell in love with. The design was so simple I decided to make one of my own. And then I made a bunch of them because they were so simple. Not only is this hat easy to make in the round you can knit it back and forth as well. To save confusion I am going to give both patterns on this blog but on different pages. Knitting this hat is really simple almost so simple it shouldn't be called a pattern but I wanted to share it anyways because it has a very nice look to it. As always feel free to make one for yourself, for a friend or for charity but not for profit, and if you wish to share the pattern please share the link and not the pattern itself.

Supplies Needed:
  • Worsted Weight Yarn
  • Size 8 straight knitting needles
  • Tapestry Needle

There are a couple of ways to begin this hat:

To begin in stockinette and let the hat curl up to the first row of purl bumps possibly further depending on your yarn. This is what has been done in the picture.
To begin with an inch or so of ribbing to form a hat that hugs the face.
To begin in stockinette stitch and once the hat is finished do a crochet border to keep the hat from curling up. (This looks very nice)

To make the hat:

Cast on 80 stitches. If you plan to do knit one purl one ribbing do it now, otherwise start the pattern.

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: Purl

Row 3: Knit

Row 4: Purl

Row 5: Purl

Row 6: Purl

Row 7: Knit

Row 8: Purl

Row 9: Knit

Row 10: Knit

Repeat rows 1-10 until hat is desired length. You will continue in pattern decreasing only on knit rows that do not form the rings. IE: Rows 1, 3, 7, and 9.

Decrease 1: *K8, K2tog* repeat from * to *

Decrease 2: *K7, K2tog* repeat from * to *

Decrease 3: *K6, K2tog* repeat from * to *

Decrease 4: *K5, K2tog* repeat from * to *

Decrease 5: *K4, K2tog* repeat from * to *

Decrease 6: *K3, K2tog* repeat from * to *

Decrease 7: *K2, K2tog* repeat from * to *

Decrease 8: *K1, K2tog* repeat from * to *

Decrease 9: K2 tog across.

Slip all stitches to the opposite needle. Break yarn leaving a long tail for sewing. Thread yarn onto tapestry needle and slip each stitch one at a time onto the yarn and off of the needle, then draw up tight. Secure top then finish seam. Weave in ends. If you chose to do a crochet border add it now. I usually do 1 hdc in each stitch. Then 1dc in each hdc then 1 slip stitch in each dc. Finish off. Sorry the pic below is sideways I couldn't get it right side up form some reason.

I love your patterns. Am new to knitting, and have made a few hats to donate. I'm confused on how to decrease on this one. Do you go through the pattern more than once as you decrease? Thanks in advance.

Kody May,
What does repeat from * to * mean, are we just repeating the same thing twice? I'm new to knitting. Thanks. Maria

I'm new to knitting. If I were making this for a 5yr old size head, how many would you recommend casting on? I look forward to your reply. Reply to my2andnomore@yahoo.com

I love your pattern. On the page in Ravelry you say you are giving instructions both for knitting in the round and on straight needles. However, I don't see the pattern for knitting in the round.
Could you please clarify?
Thank you,
CanC
