I looked online and couldn't find anything free that suited my needs so I made up this little pattern. It is for a 0-3 month old but could easily be modified to fit any head. I will include notes on how to do this at the critical points.
Materials:
Worsted weight in green, black and a small bit of yellow.
G crochet hook
Row 1: With Green : Starting out with a magic ring ch 3 (counts as first dc), 11 dc in ring, join.
Row 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in same stitch as join. 2 dc in each stitch around. (24 dc)
Row 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in next stitch, (dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch) repeat around and join.
Row 4: Ch 3, dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch, (dc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch) repeat around and join. (For a larger hat continue increasing in this manner until circumference is slightly smaller than the recipients head.)
Row 5: Ch 3, through the back loop only ( for this round only) dc in each stitch around and join.
Row 6, 7, 8: Ch 3, dc around and join. Tie off at the end of round 8. (For a taller hat do more rows here)
Row 9: With Black: Ch 3, dc around and join. Tie off.
Row 10: With Green: Ch 3, dc around and join.
Row 11: Ch 3, dc in same stitch as join. Through front loop only do 2 dc in each stitch around. Join and tie off. Weave in ends. (if you want a larger brim increase in the same manner you did at the top of the hat) You can embroider buckle, make a small chain and sew it on or freeform slip stitch right into the hat as I did.
