I recently created a personalized baby blanket for a baby blanket using yarn from my stash. I wanted to remember the pattern I created and thought others might enjoy it as well. You could easily change the number of rows of single crochet on the ends to accommodate different alphabet fonts.
Measurements:
Finished Blanket Dimensions: 26" x 36"
5 row Granny Square: 6"
6 rows single crochet: 1"
Materials:
Size H hook
4 colors of worsted weight yarn (Mine were light blue, medium blue, navy and cream)
Darning needle
Granny square directions: (Make 6 light blue, 7 medium blue, 7 navy blue)
Row 1: Start off with magic loop, Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2. Join to top of ch 3. Slip stitch to corner space. Ch 3, do not turn.
Row 2: 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner space. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in remaining three corner spaces. Join to the top of ch 3. Slip stitch to corner space. Ch 3, do not turn.
Row 3: 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner space. *3 dc in space between the two sets of 3 dc clusters. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner space.* repeat star to star three times. 3 dc in space between the two sets of 3 dc clusters. Join to top of the ch 3. Slip stitch to corner space. Ch 3, do not turn.
Row 4: 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner space. *(3 dc in space between the two sets of 3 dc clusters) twice. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner space.* repeat star to star three times. (3 dc in space between the two sets of 3 dc clusters) twice. Join to top of the ch 3. Slip stitch to corner space. Ch 3, do not turn.
Row 5: 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner space. *(3 dc in space between the two sets of 3 dc clusters) 3 times. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner space.* repeat star to star three times. (3 dc in space between the two sets of 3 dc clusters) 3 times. Join to top of the ch 3. Slip stitch to corner space. Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing squares together.
Assemble granny squares according to picture using whipstitch.
Working along longest edge first, do 4 rows navy in single crochet back and forth. Do other long edge in same manner.
Then do four rows of navy single crochet along each short edge. (Doing it like this instead of working in the round creates a more squared appearance.)
In same manner as navy, use cream to single crochet 6 rows on the longest edges and 11 rows on the shortest edges. (I chose 11 rows because my alphabet was 7 stitches high giving me a 2 row border above and below the name. You can adjust according to the alphabet you use. I would include a link to the alphabet I used but I cannot find it anywhere! There are many available online for free using google images.)
Cross stitch alphabet letters of your choice on the short edges in the cream. Weave in all your ends!
