Kisses and Hugs Cabled Hat

I call this the Kisses and Hugs hat because the cables look like x's and o's. It's meant to be a very close fitting hat. It is knit on straight needle with a seam sewn up the back. The cable pattern in very easy and is so much fun to watch develop! Plus it knits up fast. I knit it while watching a boring baseball game with my dad. It is a free pattern so long as it is used for personal use only. Make it for yourself or for a gift but do not sell these hats. Enjoy the pattern.

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn
Size 8 Straight Needles
Darning needle
Cable needle or dpn
optional: for some people it might prove helpful to place markers every 12 sts, so you would needle stitch markers.

To make the hat:
Cast on 84 stitches
Do 1-1.5 inches of K1, P1 ribbing

R1 & 3: *K2, P8, K2* repeat from * to * around
R2: *P2, K8, P2* repeat from * to * around
R4: *P2, slip next 2 sts to dpn and hold in back, K2, then K2 sts from dpn. Slip next 2 sts to dpn and hold in front, K2, K2 from dpn, P2* repeat from * to * around
R5 & 7: *K2, P8, K2* repeat from * to * around
R6: *P2, K8, P2* repeat from * to * around
R8: *P2, slip 2 sts to dpn and hold in front, K2, then K2 from dpn, slip next 2 sts to dpn and hold in back, K2, then K2 from dpn, P2* repeat from * to * around
R9-12: Repeat rows 5-8
R13-16: Repeat rows 1-4

Repeat these 16 rows once more for a total of 2 repetitions, then do only Row one once more. Finish by following the decrease rows.

DecR1: *K10, K2tog* repeat from * to * around
DecR2: *P9, P2tog* repeat from * to * around
DecR3: *K8, K2tog* repeat from * to * around
DecR4: *P7, P2tog* repeat from * to * around
DecR5: *K6, K2tog* repeat from * to * around
DecR6: *P5, P2tog* repeat from * to * around
DecR7: *K4, K2tog* repeat from * to * around
DecR8: *P3, P2tog* repeat from * to * around
DecR9: *K2, K2tog* repeat from * to * around
DecR10: *P1, P2tog* repeat from * to * around
DecR11: *K2tog* repeat from * to * around

Slip all remaining sts to other needle. Cut yarn leaving long tail to sew up seam. One by one slip sts off needle and onto the darning needle. Draw up tight. Then carefully sew side seam, and weave in ends! Voila! A beautiful kisses and hugs hat!!!!

I actually found this cable in a book I have and knitted it into the back of fingerless gloves for my mom...She trains dogs so needs her fingertips exposed.

I'm gonna grab the hat pattern since it matches...

Thanks a ton....saves me the time of designing it!
