The Kody Hat

THE KODY LOVES RANDY HAT
This is a really simple hat made using the aran braid stitch from Barbara Walker's "A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns" I made it really simple by keeping it on two needles although at some point I will try to alter it for a circular knit version as well. Please use this pattern for personal non-commercial use only (i.e. make these for yourself or for a gift but don't sell them) Here's the pattern folks. Enjoy!
Supplies:
Less than one skein of any light to medium worsted weight yarn
(I used Woolease)
Size 8 Straight needles
A cable needle or size 8 or lower dpn
Tapestry needle
Cast on 84 sts.
Work 1-2 inches of K1,P1 ribbing
Work body in following pattern
R1: *K2, P8, K2* repeat from * to * across
R2: *P2, (slip 2 sts to dpn and hold in back, K2, then K2 from dpn) twice, P2*
repeat from * to * across
R3: *K2, P8, K2* repeat from * to * across
R4: *P2, K2, slip 2 to dpn and hold in front, K2, then K2 from dpn, K2, P2*
repeat from * to * across
Work body pattern for about 8 repeats or until hat is desired length, then repeat R1 once more. Then Continue as follows:
DecR1: *K10, K2 tog* repeat from * to * across
DecR2: *P9, P2 tog* repeat from * to * across
DecR3: *K8, K2tog* repeat from * to * across
DecR4: *P7, P2tog* repeat from * to * across
DecR5: *K6, K2tog* repeat from * to * across
DecR6: *P5, P2tog* repeat from * to * across
DecR7: *K4, K2tog* repeat from * to * across
DecR8: *P3, P2tog* repeat from * to * across
DecR9: *K2, K2tog* repeat from * to * across
DecR10: *P1, P2tog* repeat from * to * across
DecR11: K2tog across
Finish: Slip all sts to empty needle and cut yarn leaving a long tail to sew up seam. Take yarn on tapestry needle and thread through each st on needle pulling them off as you go and pull tight. Sew up side seam and weave in ends. You're done! I worked this hat in an evening. The pattern works up quick and is easy to memorize. If you like email me photos of your hats to hellokittygirly1986@yahoo.com I'd love to see other's variations.

Glad to help! I love it cause it doesn't take much yarn so I can use nice yarns and it doesn't cost a fortune and it dresses up redheart type yarns too. Cables are so much easier than they seem. send pictures if you like when you finish. Happy Knitting

I finished it in one day! *glee*

Thank you so much :D

(the scarf was on Tuesday, hat on Wednesday)

THank you so much for the pictures. Isn't it fun when you finish the hat the same day you start it. That's what I've been striving to do with all my hat patterns! Great job. It looks so good!

I love your patterns. I just ordered some dpn's so that I can make them.

Please continue to create because they're the best I've seen so far

You are a very talented designer! I am going to make this for my fiance, and I just happened to have bought some woolease today. Perfect! Congratulations on your engagement (or marriage if this is old)!

I made this hat exactly to your specifications except I used size 9 needles. This is the first had I've ever made, and it turned out just like your photo - except for one thing: this hat would only fit a child!

I don't understand! Any advice?

Thank you so much for your patterns! It's so awesome to have found a blog with cool easy patterns to knit up. I especially love the fact that I don't have to knit in the round! I will make sure to send you pics of my finished work! Thanks so much for your patterns, it's helped me improve my knitting ability!

Thank you for the "He's No Angel Hat Pattern". I made it for my grandson yesterday, and now the younger grandchildren want one too!
The pattern was very easy to follow and quick to knit.

Thanks so much for leaving a comment. I love that pattern too! I like how mosaic knitting looks complicated, but is really super simple and fast! Happy Knitting!

I'm currently working on this as I do my Swedish homework! It's going to part of my boyfriend's Christmas present, because I made him a hat a while ago but it ended up not even covering his ears (though it went past my NOSE...). He still wears it anyways, but I want to make him something that is actually useful and fits correctly, so I'm hoping this works. I'm using size 9's because I'm a pretty tight knitter.

Was able to work the hat quickly, but it is too small for an adult. Followed pattern directions exactly. What am I doing wrong???

I am not sure. This pattern has fit me and everyone who's tried it on. The most common reason a hat is too small for an adult is length. Next time I would try working a hat a little longer. The only other thing I can say is move up to some size 9's you may be a tight knitter, especially with cables. Some people tend to knit cables tighter than their other knitting without realizing it.

I had the same size problem, but it was not wide enough--the length was just right. The one I just knitted would fit a head about 18" around without being stretched too much. I'm going to try again, adding two repeats (9 instead of 7, for a total of 108 cast on stitches).

Do you think I could just follow your pattern for the decrease? Or will the extra width mess things up?

Thanks for the pattern--it's a beautiful hat!

I just finished making this hat in black for my husband and he's wearing it to work tonight. I did 12 repeats instead of 8 (48 rows)because he has a large head, and previously I made your hugs and kisses hat with 48 rows and that seems to fit him well. The width always stretches out. Thanks for all your patterns - I'm an experienced knitter but I just hate knitting on circular needles so I really appreciate these straight needle hat patterns!

Is 84 the right number to cast on? I end up with 2 extra stitches when I work the 1st body row. New to knitting.
