Asminah's Hat

Asminah's Hat This hat was really hard to capture on camera. It really turned out quite breathtaking. There is a herringbone lace design that the camera doesn't really pick up well. I have included a few more pictures below to try to show you how beautiful this hat is. It is super simple and I designed and made it in under 3 hours. It does require simple crochet knowledge. It is made with Patons Soy Wool Silk which many people have been looking for patterns for but you could easily substitute any worsted weight yarn.
Supplies:
Worsted Weight Yarn ( I used Patons Soy Wool Stripes in Natural Geranium)
Size 8 11" or 16" circulars
Size 8 dpn's (I used 4)
Crochet hook size G
Darning needle
1 stitch marker
Pattern:
Cast On 80 stitches (This is knit in the round so you will want to place a markers to indicate the end of the row)
R1: Knit
R2: *ssk, K2, yo, K2* repeat from * around ending K2
R3: Knit
R4: *ssk, K2, yo, K2* repeat from * around ending K2
R5: Knit
R6: *ssk, K2, yo, K2* repeat from * around ending K2
R7: Knit
R8: K1 *K2, yo, K2, K2tog* repeat from * around ending K1
R9: Knit
R10: K1 *K2, yo, K2, K2tog* repeat from * around ending K1
R11: Knit
R12: K1 *K2, yo, K2, K2tog* repeat from * around ending K1
Repeat these rows for as long as desired. I did all rows twice and then the first 6 rows once more before beginning decreases. Remember that the hat will flatten out after the crochet row so hat will be much larger than it appears curled.
D(ecrease)R1: *K8, K2tog* Repeat from * to * around
DR2: *K7, K2tog* Repeat from * to * around
DR3: *K6, K2tog* Repeat from * to * around
DR4: *K5, K2tog* Repeat from * to * around
DR5: *K4, K2tog* Repeat from * to * around
DR6: *K3, K2tog* Repeat from * to * around
DR7: * K2, K2tog* Repeat from * to * around
DR8: *K1, K2tog* Repeat from * to * around
DR9: K2tog across row
Cut yarn leaving tail, with darning needle pass yarn through remaining stitches and pull tight then weave in ends.
Crochet Edging.
On the bottom edge attach yarn
C(rochet)R1: Ch1, 1 single crochet in each st across, ending sl st to Ch1.
CR2: Ch2, 1 double crochet in each single crochet across, ending sl st to Ch2.
CR3: Ch1, 1 single in each double crochet across, ending sl st to Ch1.
Draw yarn through last loop and weave in ends.
As always you can make this pattern for yourself or for a gift, or they can be donated to charity, but you cannot sell hats made from this pattern for profit. If you would like to share this pattern please share the link and not the pattern itself.

I already left you a comment on MySpace, but I just wanted to tell you again how pretty this hat is! I'm also linking to your blog so I don't "lose" it!

It *is* gorgeous. I've been looking for something to do with the SWS I bought solely for it's color and feel. :) Thanks so much for justifying my purchase!

How many skeins did you use for this hat? It's beautiful!

This hat looks so detailed, and very beautiful. I would like to make this for my daughter who is in College. I understand the quote about your stash of yarn. My husband makes commits all the time. I have a closet, with a beginning wall of yarn. The closet also has my other hobbies: sewing, quilting, and scrapbooking. Keep up your talent in knitting.

Thanks all. It does only take one skein by the way, and you'll have a little bit (a very little bit) left over.

KodyMay thanks for your beautiful patterns. I love the hat in soy wool by Patons. Your lucky MIL! We don't get many of your beautiful yarns in Australia but I import a lot! Currently have a lot of yarn from Sth West Trading Coy their soy yarn is sublime.

Re. the comment made about substituting Noro Silk Garden by one of the answers to your blog, Silk Garden is Aran weight to my knowledge so wouldn't work for this exact pattern.

This is a beautiful hat pattern. I made it using Moda Dea Washable Wool yarn in black for my sister-in-law for a Chritmas gift. I know she will love it! I liked the pattern so much, that I am making me a hat too.

What a beautiful piece you've knit - thank you for posting the pattern. I have a few leftover balls of SWS that now have a new use, lol.

Beautiful piece you've knit! I have a few leftover skeins of SWS that will soon be used up for this project - thanks so much for posting the 'how to' :)

Hi Kody thankyou for the pattern I used Rowan Kid Classic to knit a lovely purple version for my husband's Aunt who is dreading having to go through chemo between now and Christmas. It took 34gms as I did the repeat 30 rows of the main pattern and left irt as a roll edge so that she can adjust he depth. I forgot to take a picture as I didn't want to miss the post! Kody, is there a gauge for this pattern? I knit rather loosely, and on patterns that call for 8s I tend to need 7s (I've even been known to go down 2 sizes when knitting flat lace projects). What do you think about this? It's a beautiful hat, and if I knit the pattern through once and realized it was just too loose, I'd beat myself up. :P

Kody May said...

Because it's lace I'd say you could go down a needle size or two and it will just make the lace open up even more and stretch. Hope it turns out good for you! I don't really do guage cause on hats length really does effect how that hat fits more than anything else.

This pattern immediately caught my eye in my search for something to do with a skein of beautiful malabrigo yarn. I am interested in making this hat for my friend's daughter who is 4 - do you think I'd need to go down a size, or just make it less long? Much thanks in advance - I'm looking forward to trying this pattern!

Kody May said...

I think that with this pattern you could just make the hat shorter, but if you wanted to be on the safe side you could go down a needle size. Let me know how it turns out.

Kody May, just wanted to say thanks for this. I've just made one in a beautiful shade of very fluffy Alpaca mix. It was extremely quick to make, and looks wonderful.

Unfortunately I can't post any pictures of it yet, because I'm going to surprise my Mum with it at Christmas! Hope you don't mind me linking to this pattern as one of my 'fave free patterns' on Stitchin' Bints?

This pattern is beautiful. I just finished making my hat with wool I got in New Zealand!

I'd like to make a matching scarf. I was going to follow the same pattern flat, and purl all the knit rows. Have you tried this, and do you think the shape will come out okay if I do that?
THANKS!

Lovely pattern i can't wait to try it, I can't crochet, do you think a few plain knitted rows on the bottom would do instead?
