Super Simple Striped Teen Hat Pattern

Super Simple Striped Teen Hat
This hat is designed for tweens approx 11-14. But could also be made for a child if simply not made as long. Vertical stripes knit horizontally, not as nightmarish as one might think, In fact it's super simple! And really neat looking! An adult version of this hat will follow in the near future. For now enjoy this one! As always you can make one for yourself or for a friend but not for profit and if you must share the pattern share the link and not the pattern itself.

Supplies:

  • 2 colors worsted weight yarn (I used woolease in black (COLOR A), and redheart in a pink speckled(COLOR B))
  • Size 8 knitting needles (It is knit straight)
  • Tapestry needle

To Make this Hat: With A Cast on 80 Stitches and so an inch or so of K1, P1 ribbing.

Row 1:) WITH B- *K2, Slip 2 with yarn in back* repeat from *to*.
Row 2:) WITH B- *Slip 2 with yarn in front, P2* repeat from *to*.
Row 3:) WITH A- *Slip 2 with yarn in back, K2* repeat from *to*.
Row 4:) WITH A- *P2, Slip 2 with yarn in front* repeat from *to*.

Repeat rows 1-4 until hat reaches the desired length, ending after a row 4. Then begin decrease rows.

DecR1: With B- *K2, Slip 2 with yarn in back, K2, Slip 2 with yarn in back, K2tog* repeat from * to * across row.
DecR2: With B- *P1, Slip 2 with yarn in front, P2, Slip 2 with yarn in front, P2* repeat from * to *.
DecR3: With A-*K7, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DecR4: With A- Purl
DecR5: With A- *K6, K2tog* repeat from *to*.
DecR6: With A- Purl
DecR7: With A- *K5, K2tog* repeat from *to*.
DecR8: With A- Purl
DecR9: With A- *K4, K2tog* repeat from *to*.
DecR10: With A- Purl
DecR11: With A- *K3, K2tog* repeat from *to*.
DecR12: With A- Purl
DecR13: With A- *K2, K2tog* repeat from *to*.
DecR14: With A- Purl
DecR15: With A- *K1, K2tog* repeat from *to*.
DecR16: With A- Purl
DecR17: With A- K2tog across.
Slip all stitches to opposite needle. Cut yarn leaving long enought tail to sew up seam. Thread yarn through tapestry needle and one at a time transfer remaining stitches on needle to yarn tail. Pull up tight and secure. Sew up seam and enjoy!
NOTE: Be sure not to underestimate the length needed. This hat shrinks up and you should measure it without pulling on it at all.

Kody, I would have thought this same pattern works for adults as well, since the number of CO stitches is 80. And also, I'd like to know, since you generally knit a small length of ribbing for your patterns, if I want to make it longer (let's say 1-3/4"), how do I have to adjust the decreasing rows and still end up working them all. Hope you understand what I mean. Thanks a lot and I'll be waiting for your answer.

Actually you would be suprised how this hat shrinks right up when you knit it and doesn't fit adults, and as far as the ribbing you should be able to add ribbing and still work all decrease rows without adjusting anything except maybe not doing as many repeats as many of the patterns have a section that say repeat until desired length. You just include them in the desired length. Hope that helped!

Hmmm, I'll wait for the adult version then. Right now, I'm knitting the Eyelet Lace Elegant Pattern anyway. Kody, another question, and I hope I don't become too tiresome asking things, but what is your favorite stitch for sewing up the hat seams. You know, my problem is that I do wonderfully until it comes to this point, and all because I'm very clumsy with circular needles. I do the mattress st but would like to know if there is even an easier one. Thanks for your help!

I love your questions keep em coming lol. I love to hear back from people. I've got a few other projects lined up like a hat with the Aum symbol on it which I will be offering in both flat and circular. I know exactly how you feel about the seams. I will often make something but not put it together cause I HATE seaming, but alas mattress stitch seams to be the only one that makes the seam look nice. I'm gonna be keeping my eyes out for something better and will let you know when I find it!

Love your hats! They're perfect for my DDs and the charity knitting I do. I've prob knit enuf hats to reach floor to ceiling, so finding something good looking, fun, easy, not boring and new - with good instructions - is great! Can't wait for the adult version of this one.

Could you explain the notation *to*? Thanks!

Hi there, can't I use larger needles and/or bulkier yarn to make a larger sized hat? This is the exact pattern and color I am looking for but my teen has a size 23 inch head. This hat and the color combination is exactly what he asked for.

Yes you could either use larger needles and yarn or increase the cast on number. I would suggest knitting a guage swatch and going from there.

Hi- I love the look of this hat but I am confused by a couple parts of the pattern. I wonder if you can explain. In the first row of the decrease section, the sequence ends with K2tog, at which point it says to repeat, starting with K2. However, the next two stitches (on the previous row) would be P2, so do we knit over these Purls? or Slip 2 then continue with the sequence starting with K2?

Secondly, I love how the top of your hat is one color and the bottom is the other... but mine ended up all Color A with just some stripes of Color B. Indeed, the decrease pattern is all in Color A from DecR3 on. A is the same color you started with, in the ribbed section. So how did your hat end up white on the top and black on the bottom?

Anyway, great pattern. If I can figure out the glitches I'll make it again. Thanks!

Could you please tell me how many inches you usually knit this hat pattern before you begin the decreases? Thank you for your help!
