Angie's Football Game Hat Pattern

Angie's Football Game Hat Pattern
My boss asked me to make her a hat to wear to the Benzie Football Games. You never know whether it's going to be like, rain, snow, etc... So she asked for an earflap hat with long ties with tassels on the ends. Red and white for the team colors of course, and a pom pom on top. What makes this little baby unique from most earflap hats is the brim for keep rain and snow outta your eyes. This hat also has slightly wider earflaps than most. As you can see from the picture below the hat has a really nice profile. It is knit in the round and you will need to know hot to crochet and braid. There's a lot going on to make this hat yet it can still be completed in just a few hours. You can use this pattern to knit one for yourself or a friend but please don't sell them unless 100% of the profits go to charity, and if you would like to share the pattern please share the link and not the pattern itself.

Materials Required:
  • Less than 1/2 Skein Red Heart Worsted Weight for MC
  • Small amount of Worsted weight for CC. (You could substitute a novelty yarn here as the CC Yarn really doesn't need to match any guage)
  • Size 9 circular and/or dpns
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Plastic Canvas (about a quarter of a sheet, maybe less)
  • Size F Crochet Hook
  • Stitch Markers or scrap yarn
  • Stitch Holder or scrap yarn

Abbreviations:

  • K1FB- Knit one in front of the stitch, then knit one in back of the stitch before removing from left hand needle
  • M1- Increase by lifting the thread between the stitch just knit and the next stitch to be knit, and knitting in it. (You can increase in another method but this looked quite decorative on the earflap)
  • Inc1- Pick up loop from one stitch below and knit in it.

Earflaps: (Make 2)

Cast On 7 stitches

R1: K2, K1FB of next stitch, K1, K1FB, K2

R2 and all WS rows: Purl

R3: K2, M1, Knit to last 2 stitches, M1, K2

Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until you have 21 stitches

Then continue in Stockinette stitch for 15 rows.

Transfer first earflap to stitch holder and cut and secure yarn. Begin knitting earflap two and when earflap two is done, leave on needles and begin main body of hat.

Body of Hat:

Knit across earflap, then Cast on 15 stitches using whatever method you choose. (I used backward loop), Knit across second earflap, Cast on 23 stitches, Place a Marker then join in the round. You will now continue straight knitting until hat is about 2" short or desired length, but probably not any less than 4" from the top of the earflap. Then begin the decrease rows.

DECR1; *K8, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DECR2; Knit
DECR3; *K7, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DECR4; Knit
DECR5; *K6, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DECR6: *K5, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DECR7: *K4, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DECR8: *K3, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DECR9: *K2, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DECR10: *K1, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DECR11: K2tog, across
Cut yarn leaving a tail and using tapestry needle thread yarn tail through remaining stitches and pull up tight.

Brim:
In the center or the face opening (Where you cast on 23) Pick up 7 stitches.
K1 row.
Next Row: P2, PM, M1, P3, M1, PM, P2, Pick up 2 more stitches (You'll need to space your picked up stitches so that when you pick them all up you meet the edge of the face opening. For me it worked out by picking up my two stitches at the end of each row in one of the loops made by my backwards loop cast on.)
RS:K to end of row, Pick up 2 stitches.
WS: Purl to Marker, Slip Marker, Inc1, Purl to Marker, Inc1, Slip Marker, Purl to end, and Pick up 2 stitches.
Repeat last two rows until you have 10 stitches, Marker, 11 stitches, Marker, 10 stitches. You will be finishing after a knit row.
Turning row: Knit across.
RS: Bind off 2 sts slipping the first stitch instead of knitting it before binding off, Knit to end.
WS: Bind off 2 sts slipping the first stitch instead of knitting it before binding off, Knit to marker, Slip Marker, P2 tog, Purl to 2 stitches before marker, P2tog, Slip Marker, Purl to end.
Repeat last two rows until you get back to your original 7 stitches and cast off. Cut a brim shape out of the plastic canvas slightly larger than the knitted brim so that it stays taught. Put inside the brim pocket you just knit and sew the pocket together so that the plastic canvas is concealed.

Edging:
With contrasting color and size F crochet hook beginning at the back of the hat, single crochet across the edge of the earflap then up over the end of the brim, around the edge of the next earflap and finally around the back. Secure and weave in ends.

Finishing Details:
Make and attach a pom pom to the top of the hat using whatever method you find easiest. For the braids at the sides of the earflaps I just cut 6 long strands for each side. 3 White, and 2 Red. Then I attached them in three groups of two centered at the bottom of the earflaps, braided until I thought they were a good length then I tied a knot and cut the remaining off leaving a little bit of the bare yarn length so it looked tassel like at the end.

Thanks so much and happy knitting! As always if you have any questions you can email me at hellokittygirly1986@yahoo.com. I will try to get back to you as soon as possible. I would also love to see pictures of the finished hat you make from the pattern!

I love this hat!! I really like that you left the main part a plain color, that way if someone wanted it specifically for sporting events they could knit the emblem of their favorite team on the side.

Yeah exactly! I was going to put either a B for Benzie right on the earflap or her kid's football number on the side but she has more than one player so this way it works for all of them.

This hat is so cool and retro! I can't wait to try it. I'm a new knitter, so I hope I can do it justice! Glad I found your blog. :)

I love this. I think my son would love it. It rains so much in Victoria, BC,where he lives. I like it although I may adjust it to accommodate a ponytail.

Kody, I love your hats! They are very unique - you have a great imagination. I'm just wondering what measurement your use for your knitting needles: metric, Canadian / British, US, etc.
Keep up the good work!

Hi Kody,

Thanks for your generosity in sharing these great patterns, Just one small question - what is PM in the brim?

Thanks for your time. I am making a matching pair of these for a couple who are baseball sports fans.

Oh me oh my, I have to add this to my Christmas gift list. My little sister lives in a teeny tiny town in the mountains of Idaho, where you never know what kind of weather you'll be getting. Well, at least now I know what kind of gift she'll be getting! Thanks for the GREAT pattern!
