Sallydog Dog Sweater

I got an email asking me to design a flat knit dog sweater for a Jack Russel Terrier in Austrailia! I love a challenge so I went for it! Sadly right now I have no doggies to put this on. So hopefully when the person it was designed for makes hers, she'll grace us with pictures so you can better see what it looks like on a dog and not on my arm with my fingers stretched til it hurt! It is knit flat and seamed, which makes the leg hole placement a little easier! It may appear smaller in the pictures because the cabling draws the fabric in a lot without a dog to stretch them over :) The pictures may make it hard to see but along with the large center cable there in an almost ropelike cable along the sides. If all you have knit so far is scarves you can knits this dog sweater!!!!
Edited January 2009 to correct line 4 to start with K4.

Repeat rows 1-22 once more then repeat rows 1-16 once more. In total you will have done Rows 1-16 three times, and rows 17-22 twice.
Do 1" K1, P1 ribbing and then bind off in K1, P1 pattern.

Underside:
Cast on 22 stitches
Important Note: For this part you will need to keep track of your rows. Just keep a tally so you know which row you are working on. The first section of ribbing doesn't have to match up with anything so don't worry, the set of ribbing you do at the end of this section should match up with the amount you did on whichever end of the top of the sweater you are going to use for the neck)
Do 1" of K1, P1 ribbing then continue in stockinette keeping in mind that on the following rows you will complete decreases as directed.
On row 29 K2, K2tog, Knit to 4 stitches from end, K2tog, K2
On row 39 K2, K2tog, Knit to 4 stitches from end, K2tog, K2
On row 49 K2, K2tog, Knit to 4 stitches from end, K2tog, K2
After row 55 switch to K1, P1 ribbing to match top of sweater. Bind off in K1, P1 pattern.

Starting at the neck sew chest section, skipping a section for leg holes on each side, then seaming to the end. The underside will not be as long as the top. Weave in ends and put it on your doggy!

Make one for dog or a friends but do not sell them unless 100% of profits goes to charity. If you want to share the pattern please share the link and not the pattern itself. Thanks and Happy Knitting

Very cute! I have a rather portly chihuahua that this should fit (and he always needs extra sweaters for the winter!)

WOW!!! I love it!!! I really like the color too!! Do you have a crochet version? I would love to make one for my dog Molly! We adopted her. She was hit by a car when she was a baby. She is always cold! I have never made a dog sweater before!

Here is Molly's blog!

This is a very chic design, it should prove a fun knit for small dogs. The color also is nice, looks like a Barbie pink on my monitor. Can hardly wait to see what you'll create on your next post!

Another beautiful creation! I love it!! The color is so pretty and the cable design is stunning. I think it would make a lovely pair of long fingerless gloves. Hmmmmmmmm.....
(as she gets a pencil and some paper to start the planning) ;)

Kody May,

I love your hat designs and I've enjoyed reading your personal blog as well. Thanks for sharing your patterns with the knitting community. They're great!
I nominated you for an award on my blog.

I would definitely love to give this pattern a try. The problem is I have not learned to use dpn's yet. Are they too necessary, or is there a way I could do the whole thing with regular or circulars?

You don't need dpns. The whole thing is knitted flat on regular needles and seamed. So you can definently do it!

Hi Kody, I'm in the process of knitting your dog sweater for my chihuahua. I am having a problem with line #4. I end up with extra stiches on the left needle.

I've made 3 of your brother in law basket weave hat and love them. Thanks

Has anyone eles made this pattern? I have finished the back and it does not look like the one in the photo above. Everything looks the same ecept where line #4 is and is repeated.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
Andrea

I have a bulldog mix that is a lot larger than a Jack Russell. I wonder if you might give me tips on making this sweater fit my dog? Her measurements are: neck - 19", chest 31" and length 20". She is very short haired and there is no heat in the house, so we are both shivering this winter.

Thanks,
Sande

I would try doing a gauge swatch with size ten needles. It would still be plenty warm, or add more stitches in the purl sections between motifs. Good luck!

Thought you might like to see this. I knitted the little jumper and put it on my puppy. He looks so cute as you will see.

Is size 8 needles a UK 8 or US 8?

Thank you so much for two things:

1. The pattern is great. I have been unable to find a pattern for a flat-knit dog sweater and this is almost exactly what I was looking for (I was looking for a garter stitch sweater because I cannot do stockinette stitch, I never learned to purl. I will try it in garter stitch and will try to remember to tell you if it works out all right.)

2. Your forum allows me to post comments because it has an option for you to post as Anonymous rather than signing in as a Google account or Open ID. I do not have a Google Account and do not know how to use the Open ID. Most forums do not have the option to remain anonymous. I always get really annoyed because I cannot ask questions and post my comments.

Thanks for everything. I appreciate it.

Would it be possible for you to post the measurements (particularly girth) of the dog this is designed to fit?

How far down do we leave open for the legs??

Thank you for the pattern. I knit it on one size larger needles for my 12 lb pug, and it fits her quite well. The back is a little long for her, but that's not a big issue. I love the look of the cables on her back, they seem so much more intricate than they were to knit in practice - the instructions are clear and easy to follow. I didn't have double pointed needles the right side so I just slipped the stitches to a pencil, before slipping them back to the left needle - no DPNs needed.

Can you design a flat knitting , solid color dog coat? Thanks Cindy cynthiachristmas@aol.com

What is the purpose of wrapping the six stiches in row 20 on the backside? I can’t see where they used or mentioned in the rest of the pattern.
